JB Carr Team: The gentlemen of the JB Carr team played Kilkenny Wednesday 12th April last. After a fierce struggle our team went down three and one half matches to one and one half matches. Playing for Callan in a scotch foursomes format were John Healy with Liam Duggan, Don Bolger with James Wellwood, Paddy Grace with Jim O’Brien, Liam Brennan with Denis Collins, and Pat Mulrooney with Michael Somers. The sub pairings were Martin Brennan with Marty Parker and John Kirwan with Michael Quinlan. Team Manager was John D. Grace.
Provincial Towns Team: The Provincial Town team played on Saturday 15th April last against Kilkenny, with Kilkenny having home advantage. At home for Callan were Martin Cuddihy, Thomas Hennessy, Liam Hennessy and Liam Duggan. Playing away in Kilkenny were James Tenneyson, John Doheny, John Kennedy, Paddy Grace and Patrick Hickey. We had one mighty battle both at home and away with two very closely matched teams. Out first at home was Martin Cuddihy who played some superb golf and his match ended up being the deciding match on the 19th. The youngest and the most senior players on our panel, Liam Hennessy and Liam Duggan, both played some amazing golf to win their respective matches on the 16th 3 up with 2 to play. Tommy Hennessy lost his match to a stronger opponent on the day. Meanwhile, in Kilkenny Pat Hickey was up against Richie Power who was in great playing form and Pat lost his match after a brave struggle. John Doheny lost his match after a very up and down game which could have gone to either player. Jamie Tennyson had a great win on the 14th and Paddy Grace won his match on the 18th. The match was all square. Nail biting. Nerve wracking to watch. It was all down to the final match in Callan. It was all on Martin Cuddihys shoulders. He was two down on the 16th so he had to win the next three. The 16th was halved after a fantastic up and down by Martin. He won the 17th after his opponent made a rare slip. Up the 18th they went with the Kilkenny Club man still one up and Martin needing to win. Two fantastic, perfect, up the middle drives. Two nervous pitches left short. One great chip on by Murt and a nervous chip by his opponent helped Murt to win the 18th. On to the 19th. The spectators from both sides were being treated to all that is best in match play. Again the Kilkenny man and the Callan man hit good drives. Their second shots were again one short and right and one left. The Kilkenny man chipped from the front right to the back of the green to twenty feet. Martin had a very difficult chip cross slope from the left of green. His shot slid down slope and away from the hole to leave him hitting again and went too far past with his fourth shot. His opponent took his advantage and won the hole winning the Match for Kilkenny five and four.
Barton Cup Team: Our Barton Cup team played Kilkenny in the first round last Monday 17th April. Kilkenny had home advantage with three matches in Kilkenny and two in Callan. First out in Callan were Jeffrey Lynch and Martin Cuddihy. After the first six holes they were two down. But this resilient duo were not going to go quietly and after a titanic struggle they emerged, from the ‘corner of death’ in Callan for away teams, back in front. Martin O’Halloran and Liam Hennessy were out second in Callan and it was tit for tat in this match, which was equally matched. They were three down with three to play on the sixteenth. Meanwhile in Kilkenny John Doheny and Niall O’Sullivan put on a display of golf for their opponents, to win on the thirteenth one under par and six up. The second pairing in Kilkenny, Nicholas Walsh and Keith O’Dwyer, had a similarly great round bringing their game in after fourteen at five up. It was nerve wracking for the supporters at home in Callan. We were two matches up and ahead in one in Callan and behind in one. Jeff and Murt lost the fifteenth but took their opponents on the par three 16th with a half. Callan were victorious by a margin of three wins and two matches called in and halved. Murt O’Halloran and Liam Hennessy had pulled their match back on the 16th and were about to win the 17th when called in. Mick Hickey and Andrew Needham our third match in Kilkenny were called in. At last after two narrow defeats during the week in the JB Carr and Provincial Towns a great victory for Callan. Our lads are out next against Gowran after they defeated of Mount Juliet in the first round.
Duggan Cup and Pierce Purcell: All of our other teams are practicing and will be ready for their encounters when the time comes. The Gentlemen of the South Leinster team are practicing in both Callan and in Borris this week as we are away to Borris this month in the preliminary round. The Pierce Purcell team will be practicing this Thursday 20th and we have a practice match against Gowran on Saturday 22nd. The Duggan Cup team play their opening match against Gowran on Sunday next at one O’clock and we would hope that as many supporters can make it to Callan as possible or to Gowran, three pairings are out in Callan and two in Gowran. We would like to wish Martin Brennan, team manager, and his panel all the best in this encounter. The panel this year is Paddy O’Donovan, Johnny Kennedy, Denis Collins, Jim Kirby, Liam Duggan, Martin Maher, Michael Murphy, John Doheny, Ollie Power, Liam Brennan, Tom Kenny, Joe Madigan, Peter Ryan, Jimmy O’Brien, John Ryan, Jim Wellwood, Seamus Cuddihy, Jimmy Dunne, Ritchie Condon, Kevin O’Driscoll, Jimmy Hillman, Tony O’Driscoll and John Healy.
