Kirby Mixed Foursomes: Names are now being taken for this year’s mixed foursomes competition the Kirby Perpetual Trophy. This is a fantastic way to meet other members of the club and enjoy some ‘relaxing’ golf. The time sheet is upstairs in the bar and is open to all members of the club. Pierce Purcell Trophy: The Pierce Purcell qualifiers were on in Gowran last weekend and our lads were out at 7.30 on Saturday morning alongside Gowran. First in action were Paul Cashin and Peter Ryan out second were Tony O’Brien and Shane Roche. Third out were Paddy Donovan and Johnny Kennedy. Fourth out were Pat Parle and John Shiel and last out were Benny McGuire and Ollie O’Connor. Some of our pairings brought in some fantastic scores but it was not to be our day and we failed to qualify for the playoffs on the Sunday.
Men’s Competitions: The Wednesday open singles competition sponsored by O’Dwyers Golf stores was won by Denis Collins with a great score of 43 points. Second was one of our up and coming Junior members Blade O’Gorman, with a great score of 40 points. The gross went to Michael Green of Carrick On Suir GC with 39 points and the Visitors prize went to Brendan O’Hanlon of Borris GC with 39 points. We had ten twos recorded with Pat Kerwick, Andrew Needham, Tony O’Brian and Kevin O’Gorman on the 4th, Ian Gough, James Logue, Tom Maher and Liam O’Hara on the 14th, John McNena and Kevin O’Gorman on the 16th. The weekend fourball competition played on the 14th and 15th May was won by Martin McCarthy and Pierce Scott with a score of 46 points and second were Paul Roche and Sean Walzer with 45 points. Four twos were recorded with Paul Cunningham having that rare bird the EAGLE on the 13th and John Lennon, Michael Murphy of Kilmanagh and Tom Maher on the 16th. Next weekend’s men’s competition is the Monthly Medal sponsored by Abbey Interiors.
RGA Competitions: The Gentlemen of the RGA played a 15 hole stableford competition last Monday 8th May and the winner with a score of 35 points was Joseph Cuddihy, second was Tony Cole with 33 points and third was Michael Comerford with 32 points. The RGA will be playing for the Eddie Lyons trophy on May 22nd next and the Senior Alliance is in Carrick On Suir on May 29th.

Course condition update: We would like to remind ALL members to take and use a divot repair sand bag from the first tee and return same to the station at the 18th after your round. Also, please refrain from bringing buggies onto the apron of greens as this can cause considerable damage. Our course manager would like to remind all players that the practice putting green is for putting only and that practice chipping onto it is not allowed.
Ladies Section news: The Captain William Gilbert’s prize to the ladies competition was held last weekend and after a hard fought competition the winner with a score of 40 points was Mary Lanigan. In second place was Noelle O’Driscoll with 36 points. Third was Mary D Grace with 36 points and fourth was Catherine Davis with 35 points. The best Gross went to Breda Ryan with 26 points. The best 36 prize went to Carmel O’Sullivan and the front nine prize went to Bridget Holohan with a score of 20 points, the back nine prize going to Margaret Comerford with 19 points. The longest drive on the day was by Breda Ryan and the nearest the pin prize went to Mary Manning. A great day was had by all and the prize giving that evening was enjoyed by all who attended. The Ladies were busy over the last number of weeks with both the Challenge Cup and Finn Trophy teams representing the Club. The Challenge Team were out first playing against Carrick-on – Suir in Mount Juliet. After great golf the ladies from Callan came up short. Team Manager Pauline O’ Brien gave great praise to the team for a fantastic display and also thanked the caddies and supporters. The Team comprised Sheila Kirby, Mary Manning, Mary D Grace, Elle Madigan, Brigid Holohan, Subs Eileen McGrath, Breda O’ Brien. The Finn Trophy Team had an away match to Roscrea. The format for this competition is five fourballs. This match had the makings of a great contest as the ladies from Callan were looking for revenge after defeat last year and they did not disappoint. After a marathon match with some fantastic golf played the ladies from Callan were victorious four matches to one. Team Manager Jo Staunton was delighted with the win and thanked the team, and supporters.
Team members were Rita O’Neill/ Helena McCormac, Breda Ryan/ Noelle O’ Driscoll, Catherine Davis/ Marie Gorey, Kathleen Phelan/ Claire Henriques, Eilish Ahern/ Betty McGrath. Next Ladies team out is the Senior Cup team. The Ladies are playing Carlow on Saturday nest the 20th May in Athy Golf Club. Best of luck to Team Manager Rose Brophy and team, Rita O’Neill, Breda Ryan, Catherine Davis, Kathleen Phelan, Anne Wemyss, Eilish Ahern. The ladies singles stroke competition, for the Butler Cup, held on the 9th may was won by Rita O’Neill with a fantastic score of 72, second was Eileen McGrath with 74, third was Ann Wemyss with 74 and the gross went to Breda Ryan with 86. The front nine was won by Betty McGrath and the back nine went to Noelle O’Driscoll. The nine hole competition was won by Ann Campion CB with 17 points and second was Ellen O’Shea with 17 points CB. There is a change for anyone who wishes to play Alternate day’s at the weekend for anyone wishing to play the 3 person team event. It is one score to count on 1 to 17 and all 3 on 18. Also if anyone wishes to play the 12 hole competition on Thursday afternoon please enter in book in ladies locker room, sign and pay €3. This competition is available for the summer months starting now. If anyone wishes to play in the 9 hole competition on Tuesdays but does not have someone to play with there are two tee times one in the morning and one in the afternoon marked 9 hole you can put your name in and then others will know you are available to play 9. This does not apply if you wish to play 9 holes at any other time.
Men’s Club Competitions: The foursome competition draw is now up and could everyone please play their matches by the applicable time.
Junior Golf Section: Junior golf is back from Tuesday 30th May for age groups 8-12 years and registration is at 6.30pm. This is a great way to introduce the young budding Rory’s to golf! The Junior section will be giving golf lessons to the Juniors every Tuesday evening between 7-8pm for the summer months. Please note that any children under ten years of age must have a parent remain with them at the course at all times.
Club Lotto: Week 8 Results for the Jackpot of €3250 the numbers drawn were 2,23,31 there was no winner. Three lucky dip winners of €30 each were Sean Hanrahan, Teckie Brett and Catherine Dore.
