There was an excellent turn out for the second matchplay qualifier of the year. A superb total of 40 points was compiled by Ollie Power and the ultra consistent Simon Mccarthy who won this qualifier by a shot. It was an excellent total in this most demanding of disciplines and saw the duo home one in front of John Lennon and Adrian Cunningham. There will be a full list of the first round draw printed here next week and also a full draw on the clubs website. The new matchplay format is that after each round a redraw will take place. Well done to all qualifiers.

Traditionally the first inter club competition that beings is the Barton Cup with Tom Donovan taking charge. Tom led previous teams to the latter stages of this competiton and will bid to do so again in the coming months. The format for this competition is 5 foursomes matches played home and away with the club with home advantage hosting 3 matches. The 3 other inter club events which Callan have been entered into in the coming year are the Junior Cup (managed by Richie McMahon who enjoyed much success when managing the Jimmy Bruen team a number of years ago) which comprises of 5 golfers who have played off 5 or more throughout 2011. The Jimmy BreunShield and the Pierce Purcell trophy will also be contested. Both of these competitions have been strongly contested by Callanteams over the past number of years. Niall O Sullivan (Bruen) and Mick Byrne(Purcell) are both hopeful of putting runs together in these difficult competitions.
